From the editor’s desk

I began my journalism career as a sports writer.

I loved it.

I started on the lowest rung at the Argus Observer in Ontario under former editor and La Grande native Pat Caldwell and spent more than four years covering prep sports across the Treasure Valley in Idaho and Oregon.

Prep and college sports will always have a special place in my heart but how we cover athletics now isn’t the way we did it back in my days as a sports writer — and then sports editor — at the Argus Observer.

One of the more common suggestions we receive regarding boosting The Observer’s sports coverage is to tap local high school or college students to handle that reporting. That’s not a bad idea and we strive to make effective use of our own and other resources to give readers an in-depth package every day.

Yet the journalism landscape has changed. We are now geared to be digital first, because the print-centric model of sports coverage is now obsolete.

We approach sports reporting by posting scores online but have switched to tackling more features on sports participants than pure game coverage.

As we look to the future our focus and mission is to continually serve our readers with credible, professional created local news and information. Delivering all content — whether it is sports or news — will continue to evolve and improve as will the myriad ways we reach our target audience.

Subscribers also now have access to Sports Illustrated content online, too, as a digital only feature.

If you haven’t already, take a moment to register your subscription for digital access of The Observer. Call 800-781-3214 to talk to one of our customer service staff who will be happy to walk you through the process. It’s easy, takes just a few moments to get set up and allows you to take advantage of our e-edition, app and website delivery along with your print subscription.

I believe you won’t be disappointed.

Andrew Cutler is the interim editor of The Observer.
