High school baseball: Scappoose brings end to La Grande season

SCAPPOOSE — The dream of an all-Greater Oregon League 4A state championship game ended with the bats of Scappoose as the Indians downed La Grande, 6-4, in the semifinal game of the 4A state baseball playoffs on Tuesday, May 30, in Scappoose.
After a scoreless first inning, the Tigers put the first run on the board in the second and when Sam Tsiatos hit a line drive into right field driving in two additional runs, La Grande was up 3-0 in the second.
The Indians cut the lead to 3-1 in the bottom of the third inning. The Tigers added an additional run in the top of the fourth inning to extend the lead back to three runs at 4-1. Scappoose used the bottom of the fourth to score three runs and knot up the game at 4-all.
The fifth inning saw both teams go scoreless. The Tigers did see a base runner in the top of the sixth, but he was left stranded and the Indians took their first lead of the game, 5-4, in the bottom of the inning. A blooper to center scored a second run and the Indians extended the lead to two runs.
La Grande was unable to get the bats going in the final inning and after five unanswered runs by the Indians in the latter part of the game, Scappoose took the victory.
The other semifinal game saw Pendleton, the second Greater Oregon League team in the playoffs, win a 9-0 game over Gladstone and advance to the 4A championship game.
La Grande ends the season with a 20-6 overall record and a second-place standing in the 4A Greater Oregon League.
Graduation will take a bite out of the Tigers as Jace Schow, Logan Williams, Tsiatsos, Owen Rinker, Moah Mcllmoil, Gabriel Zamora, Jarett Armstrong, Ryan Jones, Cole Shafer and Eli Bisenius will not return to the field next season.
