LA GRANDE — Jimmy Burgess is bringing a southern spin to La Grande’s food scene with Jimmy B’s BBQ.
The South Carolina native has opened a food truck in the parking lot of Birddog Glass, 702 Adams Ave. Burgess learned to cook alongside his family. He got started around the age of 10 and has been cooking ever since.
“I just love cooking,” he said.
His culinary career started with catering, which Burgess said happened on a whim. He attended a barbecue where he watched someone cook chicken for only 15 minutes. Knowing it was still raw, Burgess stepped in and said “let me do this.”
Burgess said his name got around and things just took off from there. He considered getting into the food truck business a few years back, but the COVID-19 pandemic put that idea on the back burner.
This year seemed like a good opportunity to revisit the food truck idea and on Monday, June 5, Burgess opened Jimmy B’s BBQ. Both family and friends have pitched in to help.
The food truck is open from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Monday, Wednesday and Friday.
The menu will rotate through barbecue meats, including dishes like brisket, pulled pork and BBQ chicken. They also have various side dishes, like BBQ beans, coleslaw, potato salad, corn and baked mac and cheese.
However, Wednesdays will always be dedicated to wieners. “Wiener Wednesdays” will feature everything from hot dogs to sausages to bratwurst. Burgess has done some creative combinations, such as chili cheese dogs, BLT dogs and grilled cheese dogs.
Burgess said that the menu is always changing and he will continue to add more items to the menu. Anyone looking for a sneak peek of the meats can check out the business’ Facebook page the day prior.
The current location on Adams Avenue is only temporary. Burgess said he plans to relocate the food truck to an empty lot on Monroe Avenue across the street from Rob’s Speedy Delivery at some point during the summer.
