High school girls wrestling: A pair of Tigers compete at nationals

FARGO, N.D. — Two of La Grande’s best female wrestlers picked up a taste of the talent at the national level, taking part in the US Marine Corps USA Wrestling’s 16U and Junior National Championships held in Fargo, North Dakota, over the weekend.

The Tigers’ Kierstyn Azure took the mat in the 100-pound division in the 16U women’s bracket. Azure received a bye in the round of 64 competitors. Azure fell in the round of 32 to Minnesota’s Caley Graber in a 6-0 decision. Azure rebounded in her next time of the mat, beating Connecticut’s Abby Pallotto, 13-2.
Azure continued her winning, taking a 10-4 victory over Carly Rodriguez, of Texas. The tournament concluded for Azure after falling to Utah’s Payton Gines in a 4-0 loss.
Joining Azure on the trip, Delia Gulzow was placed in the 127-pound bracket in the junior women’s bracket. After receiving a bye in the round of 128, the Tiger advanced with a 6-5 victory over Madison Canales, of Texas. Gulzow suffered her first loss of the tournament, falling to Illinois’ Monica Griffin and finished the tournament after a 12-0 loss to Ohio’s Cassia Zammit.
