La Grande’s Kiah Carlson joins Union runners for Steen’s run

STEENS MOUNTAIN — La Grande senior Kiah Carlson may have been the lone Tiger attending the past week’s session of the Steens Mountain Running Camp, but she saw familiar faces as six Union runners were also in attendance and making the runs at over 9,700 feet above sea level.

Carlson joined Union seniors Eli Williams and Logan Pedro, junior Nathanael O’Reilly and sophomores William Mallory, Angel Shields-Marr and Taylor Weishaar for a week at the running camp, a staple in Eastern Oregon since 1975. The week of activities culminated in a 5,000-meter race up the mountain.
In the girls division, Carlson placed 21st, crossing the line in 29 minutes, 26 seconds. Shields-Marr was the top Bobcat finisher, placing 27th after a time of 30:39. Weishaar, with a time of 31:17, finished 33rd.
In the boys race, O’Reilly picked up a top-20 placement, finishing 18th with a time of 23:40. Williams, crossing the line in 24:13, finished 24th and Mallory placed 45th after posting 25:14. Pedro finished 104th with a time of 33:32.

A second round of local distance runners are scheduled to attend session two beginning this week at the Steens Camp.
