College volleyball: Mountaineers sweep Oregon Tech in home opener

LA GRANDE — The top-ranked Eastern Oregon volleyball team certainly looked the part Friday, Sept. 1, with a dominating Cascade Collegiate Conference sweep of Oregon Tech 25-8, 25-7, 25-18 in the Mountaineers’ home opener.

Sade Williams led the Mountaineers with eight kills and three aces while Madison Morgan added seven kills and Keira Vaugh chipped in with five. Alexis McMurtrey, this week’s CCC setter of the week, had 16 assists and Hailey Arritola recorded eight digs.

Willow Jackson led Oregon Tech (2-6) with five kills, but it was never able to establish a rhythm because of impressive EOU defense.

Eastern Oregon was named the No. 1 team in NAIA on Aug. 30, following a dominant run at the Magic Island Hawaii Classic. During the Mounties undefeated start to the season, they have beaten three top-25 ranked teams. EOU received 16 first-place votes in the recent ranking, with Concordia (Neb.) following with thre first-place votes.

The Mountaineers, who improved to 8-0 on the season, are back in action Sept. 2 when they host Southern Oregon.
