Letter: We are facing an energy crisis of our own making

I agree with the editorial “Oregon voters should have chance to reconsider nuclear power ban” (Thursday, Aug. 31). The Oregon Legislature has set aggressive carbon reduction goals. Maybe it’s time for the return to nuclear power.

My concern with your solution is the time it would take to get nuclear power generation back as an option in Oregon given the power supply crisis we are facing. To meet our statewide goals on carbon reduction, there is a schedule of when carbon-producing power-generating facilities across the state will be closed.

Because of these closures and the fact that we cannot replace them fast enough, our ability to generate power will be outpaced by power demands in Oregon by as early as 2025, and it will grow in subsequent years.

That means that until there is a radical shift in our ability to generate new and sustained power (or save substantially more energy), we are faced with an energy crisis of our own making. We will have growing energy supply gaps, higher prices, and rolling blackouts during the coldest and hottest times of the year.

Until we can come up with this radical change it seems to me the solution would be to follow in the steps of California and postpone the closure of these carbon-emitting plants in Oregon until they are replaced with the new production plants.

I would recommend we all contact our legislators and advocate for a postponement of these plant closures.
