High school volleyball: Powder Valley storming through early season matches

BAKER CITY — Seven volleyball matches played and seven wins in the books. The Powder Valley volleyball squad is rolling through the early season matches with ease and on Thursday, Sept. 7, the Badgers showed both an Idaho team and a Class 4A opponent is of no consequence. A victory is the end result.

Traveling just down the road to Baker High School, Powder Valley first hit the volleyball court against New Plymouth, Idaho. After a first set that saw extra points needed for the win, Powder Valley took a 3-0 victory.
The Pilgrims did force the Badgers into an extended first set before Powder Valley took a 26-24 victory. With the Badgers finally settled down, Powder Valley cruised in the second set, 25-15, and closed out the match in the third set, winning 25-17.
The Badgers had a late night with the second match of the night not starting until 7:30 p.m. as 1A Powder Valley met 4A Baker.

Placing the Badgers to the test unseen this season up to this point, Baker won the first two sets, 25-21, 25-23, placing Powder Valley within a single set of its first loss of the season. The Badgers returned in style, winning the third set easily, 25-13, and forcing a fifth and deciding set by taking the victory, 25-19. The two teams battled in the tiebreaker before the Badgers kept their perfect record intact with a 15-13 win.
Powder Valley (7-0 overall) will join the Badger football team in Burns on Sept. 9. The volleyball squad will be in the gym for the Burns Invitational while football is outside meeting Lost River.
