We are always reevaluating what we do and how we do it and that’s because we believe we owe such work to our readers.
One misconception I’ve run across throughout my career in the journalism field is the notion our coverage and work are sort of created in a vacuum. That is, there isn’t much of a process regarding which news events we choose to cover.
That’s not correct.
Rarely in my experience has that ever been the case. Our job, as I see it, is first and foremost to provide our readers with quick, accurate information that they can use. Sounds simple and, to some extent, it is. Yet we labor constantly to evaluate what we are doing. We ponder which subjects should be covered and in what way. Because we are, like all newsrooms across the nation, an organization that does not have unlimited resources, we must carefully husband our expenditure of time and money.
Yet we just don’t come to work each day and essentially throw a dart at the “what should be covered” wall and then hope for the best.
Some items must be covered. That includes city and county governments. Our system of democracy is a great one but as our founders pointed out, there must be check somewhere on the government.
How taxpayer dollars are spent is one of the crucial items of interest for us and should be for all newspapers.
We also, though, need to make sure we are covering the items that may not exactly be news but are of great importance to our readers. Coming up events and such are important for a lot of people and I think it’s important we get those types of stories into the paper on a regular basis.
We strive hard to make sure we are doing all we can to provide the best news platform, both online and in print, that we can for our readers.
