BEND — First-year head football coach of the La Grande Tigers Dalton Sheets secured his first career victory after the Tigers downed Klamath Union, 30-0, at Summitt High School on Saturday, Sept. 9.

“We came out hungry and ready to play,” Sheets said of his first win. “We emphasized finishing drives all during the practice week.”

Using primarily the run game, the Tigers put up all 30 points in the first half against the Pelicans.

“We had some long runs called back due to penalties, especially in the second half,” Sheets said. “I was really pleased with the defense holding Klamath Union scoreless the entire game. There were times we would bend, but we never did break and allow them to score.”

The Pelicans were primarily pass oriented, placing the La Grande secondary in the spotlight.

“Bekham Hibbert played outstanding defense for us,” Sheets said. “Ridge Kehr played well on both sides of the ball all night.”

Even with a victory and the shutout, Sheets said the Tigers still have work to do on the practice field.

“We still have lots to clean up,” he commented.

La Grande (1-1 overall) returns to the home fans on Friday, Sept. 15 with a nonleague game versus Estacada (0-2 overall). Kickoff is scheduled for an early 6 p.m.

“Estacada has played two teams to start the season,” Sheets said.
