College football: Eastern Oregon cools off Firestorm, record first win of the season

LA GRANDE — The Eastern Oregon University defense limited Arizona Christian to 180 yards of total offense, recorded six sacks and recovered two fumbles to help the Mountaineers to a 34-0 Frontier Conference rout on Saturday, Sept. 30, at Community Stadium.

The win is the first on the season for EOU (1-4 overall, 1-2 Frontier), snapping a four-game slide to start the season.

Eastern’s Blaine Shaw led the defensive attack with 11 tackles, a pass breakup and a sack. Henry Diaz and Joey Gutierrez also made significant contributions with eight and seven total tackles, respectively.

Jose Medina led the defense in sacks, with 1-1/2. Gabriel Shukle and Jadinn Sylve also contributed a sack each, with Shukle also causing and recovering a fumble. Jonas Waugh added to the disruption, making five tackles and also breaking up a pass.

While the defense shut down the Firestorm offense, the Eastern offense was on-point for much of the day, generating 460 yards of total offense. Quarterback Quincy Glasper shined throughout the contest, completing 22-of-32 passes for 333 yards and two touchdowns.

Malachi Spurrier was the top receiver, catching eight passes for 152 yards and a touchdown. Andre Martinez followed closely behind with 106 yards receiving and a touchdown of his own.

Eastern Oregon also had success on the ground, with Aiden Patterson rushing for two touchdowns and Brody Macmillan recording 58 yards and a score. 

Arizona Christian (2-3, 1-2) quarterbacks Tyler Duncan and Johnny Herrera combined for only 100 passing yards, while the rushing attack was limited to 80 yards, led by Justin Wright with 45 yards on nine carries.

Eastern Oregon will look to build on the win at Montana State University-Northern in Havre, Montana, on Oct. 7.
