LA GRANDE — Three of four girls soccer teams in the 4A Greater Oregon League now sport identical 2-1 records after Pendleton/Weston-McEwen took a 1-0 victory over La Grande at Eastern Oregon University on Thursday, Oct. 5.

“We just did not show up in that first half,” Tiger head coach Chris Gianandrea said. “The Buckaroos had one chance and they made it count.”

Kelsey Graham scored the game’s only goal midway through the first half. The second half saw the Tigers with chances but failing to convert those into points.

“We need to put together a full 80 minutes of good play, not 60 or 40,” Gianandrea said. “Those minutes in the second half really started to click by quickly and we could feel the weight on us to place the ball in the net.”

The loss places La Grande, Pendleton/Weston-McEwen and Ontario all with identical 2-1 league records.

Facing the Buckaroos, Ontario and Baker/Powder Valley to close out the season, Gianandrea is pleased with the way the schedule looks and the emerging star of sophomore Mattie Wolcott.

“Mattie is just so fun to watch when she is playing that outside back slot,” he said.

La Grande (7-3 overall, 2-1 4A Greater Oregon League) will be on the practice field for some time, not returning to action until Oct. 12, hosting Baker/Powder Valley (4-7 overall, 0-3 4A Greater Oregon League).

“I like we have a week to prepare,” Gianandrea said. “This is a look in the mirror moment for this team. We need to decide how we want to finish this season.”
