College volleyball: Mountaineers defeat Yotes at home

LA GRANDE — The No. 3 Eastern Oregon University volleyball team earned a victory over the rival College of Idaho Yotes in four sets on Tuesday, Oct. 17.

The Mountaineers took the match 25-20, 20-25, 25-11, and 25-14. The win improved Eastern Oregon’s record to 22-1 on the year and 15-1 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
The College of Idaho hung with Eastern Oregon in the first set, as both teams played out an 8-8 tie early on. A series of runs boosted the Mountaineers to an 18-11 advantage, allowing them to hold on to eventually win the frame 25-20.
The second set was neck-and-neck for nearly its entirety, as Eastern Oregon trailed by a narrow deficit for most of the set. Despite cutting the Yotes’ advantage to 22-20 late in the set, the Mountaineers gave up the last three consecutive points as the College of Idaho went on to win the second set 25-20 to level the match at 1-1.

Eastern Oregon bounced back with its most dominant set of the match. Despite a 3-0 run to start by the Yotes, the Mountaineers built up an 19-11 lead and never looked back. Eastern Oregon ended the set on a 6-0 run to walk off with a 25-11 victory in the third set.
The Mountaineers stayed in control in the fourth and final set, never trailing to the Yotes at any point. Eastern Oregon built up a 10-point lead midway through and won the last three straight points to win 25-14 and close out the match with a victory.
Keira Vaughn and Madison Mordan led all players with 14 kills each, while Alexis McMurtrey was top in aces with four. At the net, Mylie Mills put together a great defensive performance with seven total blocks. McMurtrey led the way in assists with 22 and Hailey Arritola led all players with 18 digs.
Up next, Eastern Oregon will travel to Portland for a weekend double header against Warner Pacific and Multnomah. The match at Warner Pacific is set to take place at 7 p.m.
