- T.J. Maxx is under construction on Thursday, Oct. 12, 2023, at the La Grande Town Center on Island Avenue. The store is anticipated to open in November in the space that formerly housed Bealls.
LA GRANDE — Shoppers in La Grande will soon have another option for their department store shopping needs.
T.J. Maxx, one of the nation’s leading off-price retailers, will open its doors in La Grande on Sunday, Nov. 19, according to media outlets. The department store will open in the former location of Bealls in the La Grande Town Center, 2212 Island Ave., under T.J. Maxx General Manager Darrin Loff.
Multiple calls to T.J. Maxx seeking confirmation were not returned.
The store will be open seven days a week — Monday through Saturday from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m, it’s been reported. Holiday hours have not yet been set.
T.J. Maxx, which has more than 1,200 stores in 49 states and Puerto Rico, is operated by its parent company TJX Companies. The company also owns chains including Marshalls, HomeGoods and HomeSense.
Last year, TJX Companies did $49.9 billion in sales, according to the company’s 2022 Annual Report. While the 2023 annual report is not yet available, net sales were $12.8 billion for the second quarter of fiscal year 2024 — an 8% increase over the second quarter of fiscal year 2023, according to the company’s quarterly report.
Earlier this year construction crews began renovating the La Grande Town Center location, which has been vacant since Bealls closed in May 2020. The department store temporarily shut its doors earlier that year due to the COVID-19 pandemic and planned to remain closed until the state lifted restrictions.
However, Bealls’ parent company — Houston-based Stage Stores Inc. — ultimately filed for bankruptcy protection after it was unable to climb out of a financial hole that was made worse by the pandemic.
Prior to Bealls moving into the building in 2009 the lot was empty for a number of years after Troutman’s Emporium shut its doors in 2003. The Eugene-based clothing retailer filed for bankruptcy in December 2002 and closed all 34 stores the following year.
Dew Claw LLC owns the La Grande Town Center, according to the organization’s parent company, Eureka-based Carrington Company. The outdoor mall was previously owned by Phillips-Edison and Company, which it purchased in 2006 from Standard Insurance.
The T.J. Maxx store at the La Grande Town Center is currently looking to fill a number of positions. Job openings, descriptions and applications can be found online at www.jobs.tjx.com.
