College wrestling roundup: Eastern men place four at Mike Clink Open

FOREST GROVE — The Eastern Oregon men’s wrestling team was back in action Sunday, Nov. 12, at the Mike Clock Open and came away with four place-winners at the event.

Trace Evans led the way for the Mountaineers at 157 pounds by taking fourth place after going 2-1 on the day. Evans won his first match of the day by major decision 13-2 over Pacific’s K’den McMullin, and followed with a 7-3 decision win over Southwestern Oregon Community College’s Daniel Jaramillo.
Evans dropped his semifinal match to Varrius Scanlan, of Umpqua Community College, 19-4. He rebounded to down Josh Abarca, who was wrestling unattached, 13-9, but fell to Simon Fraser’s Magnus McCrackin by pin in the third-place match in 1 minute, 8 seconds.
The remaining three place-winners for the Mountaineers were Hunter Kemper (157), Jason Crisostomo (174) and JR Scott (184) who all finished sixth.

Eastern Oregon will be back in action on Nov. 17 as it returns home for a Cascade Collegiate Conference dual against Southern Oregon in a Battle for the Wagon Wheel.
Flores Roque leads EOU women at tourney
FOREST GROVE — The Eastern Oregon women’s wrestling team had six wrestlers place at the Mike Clock Open on Sunday, Nov. 12.
Nayeli Flores Roque was the top placer for the Mountaineers securing a runner-up finish at 109 pounds. She won her first match by pin in 1 minute, 13 seconds and bettered that in the quarterfinals with a pin in just 44 seconds. She made it three straight pins to reach the finals when she handled Gracie Pham, wrestling unattached, in 4:14. She lost the final to Marjorie McDaniel, who was wrestling unattached, by technical fall, 10-0.
Liv Wieber placed third at 155 as she dropped her second match of the day before reeling off four straight victories, including a 10-0 technical fall over Southern Oregon’s Quilaztil Miguel-Lapham for third.
Irma Retano (116), Anna Rodriguez (130), Jocelyn Velasco (155) and Trinity Tafoya (190) all finished in sixth place.
The Mountaineers will be back in action on Dec. 15 as they travel to Reno, Nevada, to compete in the Reno Tournament of Champions.
