Special choir performance highlights Advent service

LA GRANDE — The La Grande First Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) offers Sunday school for adults at 9 a.m. on Dec. 10, and worship begins at 10:30 a.m. This second Sunday of Advent service will feature a special choir performance.

On Wednesday, Dec. 6 , the Christian Women’s Fellowship’s Christmas program begins at 5:30 p.m. On Dec. 7, the Homemakers Bible study is at 1:30 p.m., and choir practice is at 3:30 p.m. The Mens Group meets at 11 a.m. and the Devoted Daughters Bible study is at 4 p.m. on Dec. 11. A Staff Relations Committee meeting is scheduled for 11 a.m. on Dec. 12.

Weekly lesson based on Revelation 1-5

NORTHEASTERN OREGON — Members of the congregations will speak during Sacrament services at area wards and branches of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints on Sunday, Dec. 10. Relief Society, Priesthood and youth group meetings will be held during the second hour.

The “Come, Follow Me” lesson for the week of Dec. 4 is based on Revelation 1-5 and focuses on the Lord’s plan for saving his children (us) through Jesus Christ.

‘Mostly Social Book Club’ plans potluck

LA GRANDE — St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in La Grande on Sunday, Dec 10, will celebrate Holy Eucharist with Rev. Katy Anderson. The service begins at 10 a.m. and is followed by fellowship in the church hall.

Bible study is offered before the service, at 9 a.m. in the church hall. During Advent the focus of study will be on “The Great Themes of the Scripture” by Richard Rohr.

Also on Dec. 10, the Mostly Social Book Club will gather at 6 p.m. for a potluck. Bring a dish to share. The club is open to all.

Joint service will celebrate second Sunday of Advent

LA GRANDE — The congregations of La Grande’s Zion Lutheran Church and United Methodist Church will worship together on Sunday, Dec. 10. The service begins at 10 a.m. in the Zion Lutheran building and will include Holy Communion and lighting of the second candle in the Advent wreath. The sermon is based on Isaiah 40:1-11 and Mark 1:1-8 and is titled “He’s Coming.” A time of fellowship follows the service.

The service will be streamed live. The links will be posted on Zion’s website and Facebook page on Saturday afternoon.

The Religious Inquiry Group will meet at 8:30 a.m. Sunday morning at Zion, in the Fireside Room. The group is currently learning about Sikhism.

Wednesday evening Advent services begin Dec. 6

LA GRANDE — On Sunday, Dec. 10, the service at La Grande’s Faith Lutheran Church begins at 10 a.m. The message will be based on Mark 1:1-8. In these verses John the Baptist tells the people about Jesus Christ, who would come after him and who was mightier in works and gifts.

Midweek Advent services at Faith Lutheran begin Wednesday, Dec. 6. The theme for this year’s services is “Peace Came to Earth.” The sermon on Dec. 6 is titled “Look Up! The Star of Peace Draws Near.” A soup supper is served at 5:30 p.m. and the Advent service is at 6 p.m.
