College men’s basketball: Mountaineers sweep weekend road trip

PORTLAND — The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball secured two much-needed wins on the road this weekend.

The Mountaineers snapped a four-game losing streak, defeating Warner Pacific and Multnomah in a weekend double header. The wins improved Eastern Oregon’s record to 3-7 overall and 2-3 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
Eastern Oregon 77, Warner Pacific 75
The Mountaineers started off their first game of the weekend on a high note, building an eight-point lead at the end of the first half. Warner Pacific came out hot out of the gates and built and early nine-point lead, but Eastern Oregon slowly chipped away. Johnny Hillman found a rhythm, scoring 14 points off 6-9 shooting from the field and two three-pointers. Eastern Oregon shot 16-31 (51.6%) from the field in the first 20 minutes and held a sizable 18-12 advantage in rebounding. The Mountaineers went into halftime leading 42-34.
In the second half, the Knights closed the gap and outscored the Mountaineers by six. AJ Huddleston helped Eastern’s cause, scoring 11 points and hauling in four rebounds in the second frame. Hillman added eight more points in the second half to finish with a game-high 22 points.
Warner Pacific cut Eastern Oregon’s lead to 76-75 with three seconds remaining, but Hillman converted a free throw to push the lead back to two. The Mountaineers forced a turnover on the final possession of the game to hold on to win 77-75.
Hillman finished with 22 points, four rebounds, and three assists. Brennan Newsom led all players with eight rebounds, as Eastern Oregon finished with a 38-27 advantage in rebounding.
Eastern Oregon 87, Multnomah 70
In Eastern Oregon’s second game of the weekend, the Mountaineers built a lead early and extended it in the second half for a much more comfortable win than the first game of the weekend slate.
In the first half, the Mountaineers came out firing and built an early lead. Eastern Oregon shot 18-35 (51.43%) and led by as much as 18 points midway through the first 20 minutes. Garrett Hawkes scored 11 first-half points and Malachi Afework added eight to build a 46- 39 lead at the half.
Hawkes went off in the second half, scoring 19 points to finish with a game-high 30. Afework added 10 more, finishing with 18. Eastern Oregon shot 15-32 (46.9%) in the second half to conclude a hot shooting night. The Mountaineers forced 17 turnovers, which resulted in 24 points off turnovers.
Coming off the CCC wins, Eastern Oregon is set to take a road trip to the East Coast for a series of non-conference matchups in the Tampa Bay area. The Mountaineers will face the University of Fort Lauderdale at 1 p.m. PT on Dec. 21 and Florida College at 4 p.m. PT on Dec. 21. Both games will take place in Temple Terrace, Florida.
