College women’s wrestling: Retano places at Tournament of Champions, Mountaineers fall to Wayland Baptist

RENO, Nev./ROSEVILLE, Calif. — The Eastern Oregon University women’s wrestling program concluded a busy weekend, traveling to Reno, Nevada for a dual with Wayland Baptist and competing at the Women’s West Coast Tournament of Champions in Roseville, California.

The Mountaineers went neck-and-neck with the Pioneers of Wayland Baptist, as Eastern Oregon ultimately dropped three out of the last four matches to fall by 10 points.
The dual started as Eastern Oregon’s Shelby Bell was defeated by fall (10-0) at 109 and Irma Retano also dropped by fall (10-0) at 116.
Paige Chafin earned the Moutnaineers’ first points, winning by fall over Danyl Pippin 12-2. Anna Rodriguez kept the momentum going at 130, winning a 10-8 decision.
Eastern Oregon and Wayland Baptist exchanged victories, as Lexie Garza was defeated by fall 14-8 at the 136-pound division. At 143, Eastern Oregon bounced back with a 10-6 fall victory by Nayeli Matson.
The Pioneers took the final two matchups, taking victories by fall at 170 and 191.
Women’s West Coast Tournament of Champions
The Mountaineers traveled to Roseville, California to compete in the Women’s West Coast Tournament of Champions, where 19 schools competed. Eastern Oregon totaled 47 points to place sixth overall — Menlo College won with 258 total team points.
Irma Retano was the highlight of the day for the Mountaineers, as she went on to place fourth overall at the 116-pound weight class and earn 10 points for Eastern Oregon. Retano earned two victories by tech fall and one by decision along the way to placing fourth. Also at 116, Kadence Beck (6.5) and Sierra Gonzales (4) earned points for the Mountaineers.
At 136, Lexie Garza won her opening match by fall and was defeated in the championship round two by Menlo College’s Carmella Foley. Garza bounced back and won two matches in the consolation bracket to earn Eastern Oregon 11 points.
Paige Chafin made some noise at 123, advancing to the championship quarterfinal. After a defeat by tech fall, Chafin advanced to the consolation round 5 and picked up 8.5 team points.
Trinity Tafoya earned six points for the Mountaineers after advancing to the quarterfinals of the 191-pound weight class.
Anna Rodriguez (5.0), Nayela Maston (3.5), Brooke Cicierski (3.0), Delia Gulzow (3.0), and Jocelyn Velasco (3.0) all earned points in their respective weight divisions.
