Letter: Do-gooder laws do nothing for us

Back in 2020 Tina Kotek sponsored HB 4210, which took away the court’s ability to suspend a driver’s license of a person who failed to pay a fine.

How special. We should all expect people to be responsible for their actions; something that is rare these days.

Given this change both Kate Brown and Kotek are lauded for allowing over 18,000 people to escape any responsibility to pay their fines. Sounds a little like Biden’s plan to forgive student loans.

So the message to everyone who fails to pay their debts: Heck, just do what you want because you won’t suffer any consequences.

The message to police is to not bother enforcing the law because the violators won’t pay their fines anyway. The law only applies to those who can’t afford the fine. Who on earth will vet these offenders to see who can and cannot afford to pay?

This whole convoluted law is replete with issues. Does this law apply to all offenders as we move forward? Can a driver rack up any number of charges and then not have to pay on any of them?

These do-gooder laws do nothing for us other than pander to those who take no responsibility for their actions. Kotek didn’t fix a problem; she has further enabled a system that cradles those who cry foul about nearly everything.
