High school wrestling: Union girls fourth, boys sixth at Charlie Anthony Memorial

- In his final match of the day, Union’s Sam Platz took a victory over Nyssa’s Michael Corn by pin at 165 pounds during the Charlie Anthony Memorial in Ontario Dec. 28, 2023.
ONTARIO — While many of their classmates were enjoying the holiday break, the Union wrestling team was in Ontario on Thursday, Dec. 28, competing in the Charlie Anthony Memorial.

The Bobcat girls placed fourth in the team standings with 15 points. Both Madison Cathey and Hailey Wright finished third after a morning of wrestling action. Cathey, wrestling at 110 pounds, finished 1-2 for the day, including a victory over teammate McKennah Dempsey by pin. Wright wrestled in the 190-pound division and struggled to a 0-2 day in the small classification.
Dempsey and Larkin Sanders (135 pounds) picked up fourth-place finishes.
The Bobcat boys returned home with a sixth-place showing after a point total of 23.

The highest individual finish went to Nathan Crago, second in the 132-pound class. In Crago’s five matches of the day, the Bobcat fell only to Homedale’s Lane Zehr while taking four wins, all by pin.
Wrestling at 165 pounds, Sam Platz finished third in his weight class after taking a 3-1 record on the day. Finishing with a 1-3 record at 190 pounds, Austin Ritter placed fourth.
The road trips continue for the boys at the Pomeroy Christmas Tournament in Pomeroy, Washington, on Dec. 30. The Union girls next take the mat on Jan. 6, taking part in the JO-HI tournament in Joseph.
