College women’s basketball: Eastern Oregon cruises past College of Idaho

LA GRANDE — The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team picked up a one-sided victory at home on Saturday, December 30.

The Mountaineers defeated the College of Idaho 85-59, behind a balanced effort from the team’s starting lineup. The win improved Eastern Oregon’s record to 7-3 on the season and 3-3 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Eastern Oregon saw four players finish in double-digit scoring, while two recorded double-doubles. Brie Holecek led the way with 20 points, six assists and three rebounds. Beverly Slater recorded 16 points and 13 rebounds and Haley Robinett tallied 10 points and 10 rebounds. Macie Elliott added 14 points.

The Mountaineers dominated the first quarter, opening the game on a 13-0 run to set the standard early. Eastern Oregon led by as much as 24 in the quarter, before ending the first period up 28-5.

The College of Idaho found a rhythm in a high-scoring second quarter, winning 22-21. Even so, the Mountaineers took a 49-27 lead into halftime behind 12 points each from Holecek and Elliott. Eastern Oregon shot 18-36 (50%) from the field and converted 11-19 (57.9%) from three-point range.

The Mountaineers maintained the lead in the second half, led by nine points from Slater. Holecek added eight and the Mountaineers went on to hold a 36-32 advantage in the second half. Eastern Oregon finished 33-68 (48.5%) from the field and 13-28 (46.4%) from three. A 46-33 advantage in rebounding helped the Mountaineers come away with a lopsided victory.

Coming off the win, Eastern Oregon is set to host a pair of games at home next weekend. The Mountaineers will host Lewis-Clark State at noon on Jan. 5 and Walla Walla at 7 p.m. on Jan. 6.
