RENO, Nev. — The La Grande wrestling team wrapped up two days of action against teams from around the nation at the Sierra Nevada Classic on Friday, Dec. 29 at the Reno Events Center.

Over the two days, La Grande compiled 130 points for the eighth place showing. The finish was tops for an Oregon team with four California teams and a team each from Idaho, Nevada and Washington ahead of the Tigers.

“I am so proud of this team,” said La Grande wrestling coach Klel Carson.

Taking the mat a total of six times over the two days, La Grande’s Kenai Huff was the top individual finish for the Tigers, placing second in the 285-pound class. Huff swept through his first five matches, falling in the championship match to Emilio Johnson, of Oakdale, California, in a 5-2 decision.

On the other end of the weight classes, Bragen Anderson claimed third place for La Grande at 106 pounds. Anderson swept through his first four matches before a 6-0 decision in the semifinals sent him to the consolation round. Anderson then won his following two matches, taking third with a 3-2 decision over Alex Portugal, of Elk Grove, California.

The Tigers also claimed two fourth-place showings. Tommy Belding wrestled his way to a 6-2 record at 144 pounds and Ridge Kehr went 6-2 to place fourth at 165 pounds.

Mason Wolcott added 15 points to the La Grande team total after placing seventh at 132 pounds.

La Grande will attend the Mountain View tournament in Idaho starting Jan. 5.
