Youths to get creative with clay at Josephy Center

JOSEPH — Art instructor Jennifer Hawkins invites aspiring young ceramic artists on Fridays at the Josephy Center for Arts and Culture in Joesph.

The center is located at 403 Main St. in Joseph.
The classes are in two groups, for ages 7-11 and ages 12-17. The kids are invited to embark on a creative journey in a new session of clay projects.
To be held Jan 12- March 8, the younger students will meet from 10-11:30 a.m. and 1-3 p.m. for the older group.

The classes promise an engaging exploration of various construction techniques, surface designs and insights into the world of ceramics.
The project lineup includes blob box, pinch animals, slab sea creatures, slab boxes on a theme, double-pinch pot animals and textured bowls. Techniques will include slab, coil and pinch construction, along with diverse surface design methods. Students also will delve into the larger world of ceramics through engaging videos and discussions.

A native of Wallowa County, Hawkins brings a wealth of experience to her classes. With a background in art science and education from the University of Oregon, Hawkins is passionate about teaching and inspiring the next generation of artists. Currently teaching visual arts at Joseph Charter School, Imnaha Bridge School and Troy School, her love for nature and the wilderness fuels her artistic creations.
“I am inspired by the beauty of nature, its colors, textures and forms,” she said. “My intent in my art is to transform the beauty I see/perceive with heart, mind and spirit into new creations, interpretations in the media that speaks.”
