College men’s wrestling: Mountaineers take dual victory over top-10 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical

PRESCOTT, Ariz. — The Eastern Oregon University men’s wrestling team concluded a very successful weekend in Arizona.

The Mountaineers defeated No. 9 Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University 27-21, capping off a 3-0 weekend. The victory improved Eastern Oregon’s record in duals to 8-2 on the season and 6-2 in Cascade Collegiate Conference.

The dual started off well for the Mountaineers, who took nine straight points to start. At the 125-pound level, Zach Mauras defeated Allan Hendricks by fall in 2:04 to capture six points. At 133, La Grande native Braden Carson defeated Colby Evens by a 2-1 decision for three more points for Eastern Oregon.

After Embry-Riddle secured four points off a major decision at 141, Eastern Oregon bounced back with six points at 149 to take a 15-4 lead — AJ Rockwell defeated Adam Stanley by way of fall in a time of 3:20.

Midway through the dual, Embry-Riddle rallied 11 straight points to tie the matchup at 15-15. The Eagles took decision victories at 157 and 174, while winning 165 by way of tech fall.

Eastern Oregon saw victories by forfeit at 184 and 197, providing a pivotal 12 points. Emby-Riddle responded with a victory by fall at 285, allowing Eastern Oregon to win by a score of 27-21. In the extra match at the 149-pound level, La Grande native Josh Collins defeated Sam Humphrey by fall in a time of 1:55.

Coming off the trip to Arizona, the Mountaineers are slated to return to La Grande this coming week. Eastern Oregon will host Big Bend Community College for its final home dual of the season, which will serve as the team’s senior day.
