High school basketball roundup: Bobcats put up 85 points, crush Badgers

UNION — For the second time in three previous games, Union scored more than 80 points in a 85-22 victory over Powder Valley on Saturday, Jan. 6, in Union.

The Bobcats took over the game in the first quarter, putting up 24 points to start the game followed by a 27-point third quarter showing before the bench finished out the nonleague affair.
Tee Ledbetter led all scorers with 24 points aided by Trae Frank’s 16 points. Chase Koshinsky ended with 15 points before sitting out the fourth quarter.
For Powder Valley, Brycen Martin led the Badgers with seven points.

Union (11-3 overall, 1-0 1A Old Oregon League) will go for its second league victory on Jan. 12 with a trip to Pilot Rock to take on the Rockets (4-7 overall, 0-1 1A Old Oregon League).
Powder Valley (7-7 overall, 1-0 1A Old Oregon League) also plays for a second league win, hitting the road on Jan. 11 for a game at Imbler (13-2 overall, 1-0 1A Old Oregon League).
Imbler 58, Elgin 35
IMBLER — Jake Bingaman had 19 points, Justin Frost added 17 and Henry Treat chipped in with nine to pace Imbler to a 58-35 win over Elgin on Saturday, Jan. 6, in nonleague play.
After a close first quarter of play, the Panthers clamped down on the Elgin offense, while Imbler put up 20 points in the third quarter to place the game out of reach.
“We did not have a great first half,” Imbler head coach Tony Haddock said. “Elgin played great and shot the ball well. We just sort of hung in. In the third and fourth quarters, we saw the ball go in a lot more and things got going a little.”
Haddock had praise for senior Eli Mola for the victory.
“Eli has really been a spark for us the last two games,” he said. “He does a lot of little things really well.”
Elgin’s Parker Caldwell put in nine points and James Cupp added seven points.
Imbler (13-2 overall, 1-0 1A Old Oregon League) returns to league action at home on Jan.11 against Powder Valley (7-7 overall, 1-0 1A Old Oregon League).
Elgin (2-11 overall, 0-1 1A Old Oregon League) is also in action on Jan. 11 with a home game against Pilot Rock (4-7 overall, 0-1 1A Old Oregon League). One of these teams will pick up a first league win.
PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL
Union, 39, Powder Valley 28
UNION — Sawyer Shoemaker and Kaelyn Shoemaker each scored 17 points to power Union to a 39-28 nonleague win over Powder Valley on Saturday, Jan. 6.
The Bobcats scored 12 points in the first quarter followed by nine points in the second to lead at the half, 22-15. The Union offense sputtered out of halftime, managing only three points in the third, allowing the Badgers to close to within five points, 25-20, before the Bobcats came alive in the final quarter.
Union scored 15 points in the final eight minutes to pull away.
Kaelyn Shoemaker went 7-for-8 from the free-throw line for the Bobcats.
In the loss, Powder Valley was led by Jodi Bingham’s 12 points.
Union (10-4 overall, 1-0 1A Old Oregon League) places a six-game streak on the line on Jan. 12 with a trip to Pilot Rock (4-7 overall, 0-1 1A Old Oregon League) for an Old Oregon League contest.
Powder Valley (8-5 overall, 1-0 1A Old Oregon League) is also on the road on Jan. 11 at Imbler (11-4 overall, 1-0 1A Old Oregon League).
