College men’s wrestling: Mountaineers stay in win column with emphatic win over Big Bend CC

LA GRANDE — The Eastern Oregon University men’s wrestling program earned a dominant dual victory on its senior night in La Grande on Thursday, January 11.

The Mountaineers defeated Big Bend CC in a clean sweep, 39-0. The win marked the sixth consecutive dual victory for Eastern Oregon, as the team closes in on the postseason. Eastern Oregon’s victory improved the team’s record to 8-2 on the season in duals.

Eastern Oregon started off the dual strong and never looked back. At 125 pounds, Hunter Sparks defeated Raymond Rodriguez by tech fall in a time of 2:48.

Zach Mauras kept the momentum going at 133, earning a victory by fall in 2:55 over Dalton McCorkie. Cole Cross followed up at 141 pounds, taking down Wyatt Elias by way of a 17-2 tech fall in a time of 3:39.

At the 149-pound weight class, AJ Rockwell won by tech fall over Yahir Morales with a score of 18-3 in a time of 3:47. Michael Fox kept it going at 157, pinning Grayson Dodson in just over a minute to extend Eastern Oregon’s lead.

The Mountaineers earned forfeits at 165, 174, and 184 to put the dual out of reach. Even so, Eastern Oregon did not slow down to close out the dual — Jay Smith won by pin at 197 in just 1:02. Darrian Hoobery ended the dual at the 285-pound weight class, winning by pin over Gendersuren Tsendjav in a time of 2:50.

Up next, the Mountaineers will have a week to prepare for a trip to the Midwest. Eastern Oregon is slated to compete at the Missouri Valley Invite in Marshall, Missouri from Jan. 19-20.
