Published 4:00 pm Monday, January 22, 2024
OSAA ranking in parentheses. All games on Tuesday, Jan. 23. Times listed are Pacific.
Nixyaawii at Union
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Nixyaawii (5) 10-3 overall, 3-0 1A Old Oregon League; Union (3) 13-4 overall, 3-0 1A Old Oregon League
Overview: A battle between two top-five teams is a game one should not miss.
Nixyaawii has rolled to seven consecutive victories prior to making this trip to Union. In the last five wins, the offense has rolled, putting up over 75 points in each of the games. The three losses on the record came at the hands of Crane, the top-ranked 1A team in the state, and Western Christian in the team’s opener and Mannahouse Academy.
Union had the Jan. 20 game against Griswold called off, a game that will need to be made up. Like the Golden Eagles, the Bobcats have walked through the league schedule to date with wins over Echo, Pilot Rock and Elgin. This will be the toughest league test for Union.
Elgin at Griswold
Time: 7:30 p.m.
Records: Elgin (64) 2-12 overall, 0-2 1A Old Oregon League; Griswold (63) 2-11 overall, 0-2 1A Old Oregon League
Overview: One of these teams will walk off the court in Helix with their first 1A Old Oregon League victory for the year.
A young team in a league of veteran squads, Elgin has not seen the right side of the scoreboard since way back on Dec. 9. Since that date the losses have mounted, now totaling 10 straight. This game comes down to two struggling teams looking for a moral victory at the end of the night.
Like the Huskies, Griswold is on its own skid, now adding up to six straight losses. Griswold has failed to down an Oregon varsity team this season with wins over a junior varsity and a Washington squad. A league win before the hometown fans would be a huge boost.
The Elgin/Nixyaawii game has been cancelled due to weather and road conditions.
