High school boys wrestling: La Grande finishes second to Newberg at Reser’s

HILLSBORO — Facing 25 wrestling teams from around the state, La Grande finished up the Reser’s Tournament of Champions second in the team scores to only Newberg.

Newberg finished the tournament with 224.5 points, while the Tigers wrapped up the tournament with a team total 165.5 points.

Wrestling at 144 pounds, Tommy Belding now possesses a 32-4 record for the year after claiming first place and completing his tournament a perfect 5-0. Belding finished the tournament with a 10-6 decision over Crater’s Jaxon Godley to claim the title.

Kenai Huff saw his push toward a championship fall in overtime in the final match at 285 pounds. Huff was a perfect 4-0 on the day before meeting Silverton’s Brash Henderson in the finals. Tied at the end of regulation, Huff and Henderson went into extra minutes before the Silverton wrestler grabbed the title by points.

Also finishing second was Bragen Anderson at 106 pounds. Anderson fell in the first place match to Roseburg’s Drew Dawson in a 4-0 decision.

La Grande received a third-place finish from Ridge Kehr wrestling at 165 pounds and fourth-place showings by Mason Wolcott at 126 pounds and Jaxson Leonard at 150 pounds.
