High school girls wrestling: Another tournament, another championship for La Grande

HOOD RIVER — La Grande met a new group of opposing teams Saturday, Jan. 27, with the same result — another championship trophy.
Taking part in the Hood River Invitational, La Grande outpointed second-place McNary to claim the team title among the 38 teams taking the mats. The Tigers finished the tournament with 289 points, while McNary scored 171.5 points.
The Elgin girls also made the trip, placing 30th after scoring 29.5 points.
Wrestling at 105 pounds, Dora Galindo added 34 points to the La Grande total after placing first after five rounds of competition. Galindo wrapped up her tournament with a pinfall victory over Sutherlin’s Emilijia Singleton in the championship match at the 2 minute, 46 second mark.
Galindo was not the lone top podium finish. At 135 pounds, Paige Allen wrestled to a 5-0 mark, culminating with a pin of McNary’s McKenna Unger in the finals at the 4:45 mark in the championship match.
Rilley Robinson missed first place by a single match, placing second at 130 pounds.
Robinson was pinned by Culver’s Gabriella Torres and finished 4-1 for the tournament.
At 155 pounds, Kaitlin Brock went 4-1, falling in the championship to Harrisburg’s Hannah Henderson by pin to claim second place.
Elgin’s top finish came at 125 pounds as Jacie Lathrop placed fifth with a record of 4-1.
After falling in the quarterfinals, Lathrop battled back through the consolation round to claim fifth with a pin over La Grande’s Sydnee Asure with 53 seconds showing on the match clock.
