College men’s basketball: Mountaineers grab one win in weekend series

LEWISTON, Idaho — The Mountaineers men’s basketball team came away 1-1 after its most recent weekend road trip.
Eastern Oregon cruised past Walla Walla on Friday, February 2, winning by a one-sided scoreline of 104-59. On the following day, the Mountaineers fell to the Lewis-Clark State Warriors 84-66. The weekend series moved Eastern Oregon’s season record to 9-13 overall and 8-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.

Eastern Oregon fell behind 2-0 out of the gates, but never looked back. The Mountaineers held a 53-29 advantage in the first half, setting the tone for a one-sided victory. Garrett Hawkes led the way with 12 first-half points, while AJ Huddleston added nine. Eastern Oregon converted nine three-pointers and shot 20-35 (57.1%) from the field.
The second half was more of the same, as Eastern Oregon expanded its lead by 21. The Mountaineers went on to win 104-59, behind a well-rounded scoring effort across all 13 players that saw the floor.
Huddleston finished with a game-high 15 points, one of five Mountaineers to finish in double figures. Kamal Muhammad recorded a double-double, totaling 10 points and 13 rebounds.
As a team, Eastern Oregon outrebounded Walla Walla 49-24. The Mountaineers shot 42-73 (57.5%) from the field and 15-28 (53.6%) from three-point range. Eastern Oregon opened up its reserves, scoring 51 bench points.
Eastern Oregon 66, Lewis-Clark 84
Eastern Oregon built a seven-point lead midway through the first quarter of its second game of the weekend, but ran out of gas in an 18-point defeat to Lewis-Clark State.
Hawkes scored eight points in the first half, but Eastern Oregon lost its lead and fell behind 37-27 at halftime. The Warriors ended the quarter on a 13-2 run.
Hawkes added 12 more points in the second half, but the Mountaineers were outscored 47-39 en route to an 84-66 loss.
Eastern Oregon finished 26-62 (41.9%) from the field and struggled from long range, going 2-20 (10%) from three-point range. Hawkes finished with a game-high 20 points off 8-14 shooting. Lewis-Clark’s Alton Hamilton led the Warriors with 18 points.
Coming off the weekend road trip, Eastern Oregon is set to return to La Grande for two home games next weekend. The Mountaineers will host Multnomah at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 9 and Warner Pacific at 5 p.m. on Feb. 10.
