College women’s basketball: Eastern Oregon splits weekend road trip

LEWISTON, Idaho — The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team split its weekend series, taking a win over Walla Walla and falling to Lewis-Clark State.
The Mountaineers cruised past the Wolves with a 22-point victory, before coming up just short of the conference-leading Warriors. The weekend moved Eastern Oregon’s record to 14-6 overall and 10-6 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
Eastern Oregon 76, Walla Walla 54
Eastern Oregon’s first game of the weekend was tightly contested in the first half, as the Mountaineers built a 34-30 lead. The Mountaineers shot 15-25 (60%) from the field, but allowed the Wolves to shoot a solid 12-23 (52.2%) from the field. Haley Robinett and Kelsie Siegner each led the way with six points each in the first half.
The third quarter was the turning point in the game, as Eastern Oregon took complete control. Robinett and Brie Holecek each scored eight points, while Bayley Brennan added six. The Mountaineers shot 11-16 (68.8%) from the field and outscored the Wolves 28-8. Eastern Oregon severely limited Walla Walla’s production, holding the home team to 3-13 (23.1%) from the field.
WIth the team holding a 62-38 lead heading into the final frame, Eastern Oregon managed to hold on to its advantage and go on to win 76-54.
Five Mountaineers finished in double figures, including a game-high 16 points from Robinett. Holecek tallied a game-high seven rebounds, to go along with 14 points.
As a team, Eastern Oregon capitalized off 44 points in the paint and 22 points off turnovers. For the entirety of the game, the Mountaineers finished 31-52 (59.6%) from the field.
Eastern Oregon 59, Lewis-Clark 63
The Mountaineers gave the Warriors a run for their money, as neither team led by more than eight points at any time in the game.
After a 15-15 dead even first quarter, Eastern Oregon managed to pull ahead 30-25 with four minutes remaining in the first half. Unfortunately for the Mountaineers, this would go on to be the team’s largest lead for the remainder of the contest. Lewis-Clark fought back to take a narrow 31-30 lead at halftime.
The Mountaineers remained in contention in the third quarter, holding a 16-15 advantage to tie the game at 46-46 heading into the final quarter. Lewis-Clark led by as much as eight during the third quarter, but Eastern Oregon ended the frame with two unanswered threes by Brennan.
Lewis-Clarke built a steady lead early in the fourth quarter, as Eastern Oregon was unable to pull away. The Warriors outscored the Mountaineers 17-13 in the final frame, to defeat Eastern Oregon 63-59.
Holecek led Eastern Oregon with 17 points, while Slater hauled in a game-high 11 rebounds. Lewis-Clark’s Callie Stevens led all scorers with 29 points off 11-19 shooting from the field and 5-10 three-point shooting.
Coming off the weekend series, Eastern Oregon is set to return home for two straight conference games. The Mountaineers will host Multnomah at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 9 and Warner Pacific at 3 p.m. on Feb. 10.
