High school boys wrestling: Elgin wrestling just outside top 5 at Pine Eagle

HALFWAY — Led by a championship showing by Landyn Fincher, Elgin finished sixth in the team standings as action ended at the Pine Eagle Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 3.

Imbler returned home with a top-10 showing, finishing ninth in the team scores.

Fincher, wrestling in the 106-pound class, contributed 23 points to Elgin’s total of 91 points after wrestling to a 4-0 record at the tournament. After receiving byes in rounds one and two, Fincher overwhelmed two opponents, both by technical falls, in his bid towards the title.

At 157 pounds, Gen Winstersteen came close to Fincher’s accomplishment, placing second after a 3-1 day. In the finals, Wintersteen saw a loss by pin to Tri-Valley’s Toby Walker for his lone loss of the day.

Ty McLaughlin also picked up second place while wrestling at 175 pounds. After three straight victories, McLaughlin had the heartbreaking loss of sudden death time to Tri-Valley’s Gage Warren in a 5-3 overtime decision.

Phoenix Schultze finished his day in third place in the 120-pound division. Schultze posted a 3-2 showing, winning both his final matches.

Imbler’s top finish came at 106 pounds as Evan Burns placed third in the weight class.

Burns started his day 2-0 before falling in the semifinals to Nyssa’s Jose Jimenez. The Panther rebounded with wins in his final two matches.

At 165 pounds, Isaih Trujillo picked up third after a quarterfinal loss set the Imbler wrestler into the consolation round. Battling back through opposite side of the bracket, Trujillo went 2-1, falling in the consolation semifinal to Enterprise’s Ashtyn Irwin by pin.
