High school sports: Weekend flush with district action

Break out the singlets and swim attire as district action opens on Friday, Feb. 9 for numerous teams across the area.

The Echo gym hosts the 2A/1A Special District 3 boys wrestling tournament starting Friday, Feb. 9 and concluding Saturday, Feb. 10. Teams hitting the mats include Elgin, Enterprise/Wallowa, Imbler, Joseph and Union/Cove.

On Friday, the action will begin at 2 p.m. with Saturday’s matches starting at 10 a.m. The top three finishers in each weight division automatically qualify for the upcoming state tournament. A possible fourth place finisher may qualify after all the districts have completed action.

While the La Grande girls have an extra week of practice before state qualifying, the La Grande boys will be on a bus to Crook County for the 4A Special District 4 tournament. This tournament will be only Saturday, Feb. 10 with action starting on three mats at 10 a.m. For the district, the top four wrestlers at each weight can start making plans for the state wrestling tournament.

Away from wrestling mats, the La Grande and Cove swim teams will be in Molalla beginning Friday, Feb. 9 for the 4A/3A/2A/1A Special District 1 meet. The first-place finisher in both individual and relay events automatically head to the the  state meet with the next fastest times from all the district meets filling up the 12 lanes at state.
