College men’s basketball: Eastern Oregon grabs two wins at home

LA GRANDE — The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball program capped a successful weekend in Quinn Coliseum, as the men’s and women’s team combined to go 4-0 on the weekend.
The Mountaineers defeated Multnomah 73-39 on Friday, February 9, before defeating Warner Pacific 94-76 on the ensuing day. The wins improved Eastern Oregon’s record to 11-13 overall and 10-8 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
Eastern Oregon 73, Multnomah 69
Despite the game being tied with a little of three minutes remaining in regulation, the Mountaineers scored seven of the last 11 points of the game to walk away victorious.
Multnomah got off to a fast start, leading by upwards of seven points within the opening three minutes of the game. Despite the slow start, Eastern Oregon clawed back to head into halftime trailing 35-32. Despite a slow shooting first half (37.8%), Brennan Newsom led the way with eight points to keep the Mountaineers within striking distance.
In the second half, Garrett Hawkes led Eastern Oregon with 14 points. The Mountaineers’ offense came alive, shooting 15-33 (45.5%) from the field and 9-16 (56.3%) from three-point range.
Jonny Hillman and AJ Huddleston each scored nine points in the second half, as the game came down to the wire. Multnomah tied the game at 66-66 with 3:36 remaining, before Preston Chandler hit a big three-pointer to give Eastern Oregon a three-point advantage. After the Lions scored a basket, Hillman hit a clutch three to put Eastern Oregon up 72-68. Multnomah managed a trip to the free-throw line, but Eastern Oregon held on to win 73-69.
Hawkes led the way with 18 points, while Hillman (12) and Huddleston (11) both finished in double figures. Hawkes finished with a double-double, grabbing 11 boards.
The Mountaineers finished the day 29-70 (41.4%) from the field and converted 13 three-pointers. Eastern Oregon was relentless on the boards, which led to 16 second-chance points and 24 points in the paint.
Eastern Oregon 94, Warner Pacific 76
Eastern Oregon’s second game of the weekend was much less dramatic, as a huge second half helped the team take an 18-point victory.
The Mountaineers and Warriors battled out a close first half, in which Eastern Oregon led 45-40 at the break. Warner Pacific never led during the game, but shot 16-27 (59.3%) from the field in the first half to keep things close. For Eastern Oregon, 10 points each from Huddleston and Hillman helped the team build a narrow advantage at the break.
The second half was a different story, as the Mountaineers took over the game. Eastern Oregon led by as much as 34 points midway through the frame and took control of the game. Huddleston added 10 more second-half points and Eastern Oregon saw eight players come off the bench.
Huddleston finished with 20 points, while Hillman (19), Hawkes (13), Newsom (13), and Chandler (12) all finished in double figures. Newsom finished just one rebound shy of a double-double.
Eastern Oregon finished 28-61 (45.9%) from the field and 14-32 (43.8%) from three-point range. The Mountaineers capitalized off 28 points in the paint and 22 points off turnover, as well as 23 bench points.
Coming off the wins, Eastern Oregon will travel north to play two straight road games in Washington. The Mountaineers will face Northwest at 7:30 p.m. on Feb. 16 and Evergreen State College at 5 p.m. on Feb. 17.
