La Grande's Aaron Weaver (24) goes up for a shot as two Buckaroos attempt to block on Feb. 15, 2024, at Warberg Court.

PENDLETON — La Grande’s last two games have aged head coach Shawn Brooks. After finding an initial playoff victory in the final seconds over Ontario, the Tigers went on the road on Thursday, Feb. 15, and took a 62-58 overtime win against Pendleton.

“The boys played a tough, competitive game against a well-coached Pendleton team,” Brooks said. “I’m proud of the team for persevering through the ups and downs of the game and closing the game out in overtime.”

La Grande showed balanced scoring in the game, putting up 26 points in the first half followed by a 26-point second half showing. Putting up 10 points in the extra minutes compared to only six for the Buckaroos proved to be the difference as La Grande downed Pendleton for the first time this season.

Caeden Barrett led all scorers in the game with 28 points.

“I’m proud of his leadership that he demonstrated on and off the floor to keep our young team poised,” Brooks said of Barrett. “He stepped up on defense as well, utilizing his length to get steals and blocks.”

Aaron Weaver ended the game with 13 points for the Tigers.

“Aaron had a big night, stepping up against their press to relieve pressure off our guards,” said Brooks.

Brooks also had praise for Blake Hildebrandt after scoring four threes for 12 points.

“We have been waiting for Blake to be more aggressive on offense and looking to score,” he said. “This was much needed and couldn’t have come at a better time. When Blake plays aggressive on offense and defense, we are a much better team.”

Brooks and the Tigers are now hoping lightening strikes a third time as a trip to league leading and single loss Baker on Feb. 17 with the time yet to be determined. Win or loss, La Grande is guaranteed a spot in the upcoming state 4A playoffs.

“I am proud of the whole squad for being gritty and finishing a tough road game with a win against a good Pendleton team,” said Brooks.
