College men’s basketball: Mountaineers drop weekend road matchups in Washington

OLYMPIA, Wash. — The Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team dropped its weekend doubleheader on the road, losing to Northwest and Evergreen State.
The Mountaineers lost two close games, dropping both contests by single digits. The losses dropped Eastern Oregon’s record to 11-15 on the season and 10-10 in Cascade Collegiate Conference play.
Eastern Oregon 69, Northwest 76
Despite only ever leading by one point early in the first half, Eastern Oregon stayed within contention for the entirety of the game against Northwest.
A layup by Garrett Hawkes with 4:50 remaining in the game cut Northwest’s leads to 65-64. Despite coming within one possession, the Mountaineers were outscored 11-5 to close out the game.
Preston Chandler had a career day for the Mountaineers, scoring 21 points off 8-11 shooting from the field and 3-5 shooting from three-point range. Jonny Hillman added 14 points for Eastern Oregon.
The Mountaineers were heavily outrebounded, as Northwest held a 46-31 advantage on the night.
Eastern Oregon shot well in the first half, keeping the team within striking distance. The visitors shot 16-36 (44.44%) from the field, before going 11-32 (39.7%) in the second half.
Northwest saw three of its players score in double figures, led by 18 from Trent Williams. The Eagles shot 27-59 (45.8%) from the field.
Eastern Oregon 80, Evergreen State 83
In Eastern Oregon’s second matchup of the weekend, the Mountaineers saw a double-digit lead evaporate in the second half of what would end as a three-point defeat.
A three-pointer by Garrett Hawkes extended the Mountaineers’ lead to 44-33 with 18:49 remaining in the second half. The Geoducks managed to later embark on an 11-0 run that put Evergreen State up 51-50.
Evergreen State would manage to extend its lead to nine points with 3:11 remaining in the game, the Geoducks’ largest lead of the night. The Mountaineers closed out the game on a 12-6 run, but ultimately ran out of time.
Hawkes had a prolific day on offense, scoring 32 points off 12-22 shooting from the field and a 6-13 clip from three-point range. Jaden Hansen (12) and AJ Huddleston (10) both finished in double figures and Kamal Muhammad led the charge in rebounding with 10.
Contrary to the first game of the weekend, the Mountaineers held a sizable advantage in team rebounding, 37-25.
Eastern Oregon shot well on the day, going 32-74 (43.2%) from the field. The Mountaineers capitalized off 34 points in the pain and 17 points off turnovers.
Coming off the losses, Eastern Oregon is set to close out its Cascade Collegiate Conference regular season campaign. The Mountaineers will host Corban at 7:30 p.m. on Feb 23 and Bushnell at 5 p.m. on Feb. 24. The matchup against the Beacons will serve as the team’s senior day.
