College baseball: Mounties split with Western Oregon

MONMOUTH — The Eastern Oregon baseball team wrapped up its weekend play with a doubleheader split with winning 8-7 and falling 13-1 to Western Oregon on Sunday.

In the opener, EOU got off to a solid start, posting four runs in the second inning to take an early lead. The Mounties added three more in the fourth and another in the seventh, building an 8-3 advantage. The Wolves mounted a comeback, scoring a run in the seventh and three more in the ninth to narrow the gap before eventually falling short.

Mario Landeros was a standout for the Mountaineers, launching a home run and tallying three RBIs. Joey Freitas also drove in two runs. Tyler Rebsom went 4-1/3 inning, allowing just two runs and struck out two for the win.

The Wolves scored seven times in the first three innings to seize control of the finale. Chase Nett was responsible for EOU’s lone run with a solo home run.

EOU, now 6-5 on the season, returns to Optimist Field on Saturday to host a weekend series with Corban.
