1A girls basketball state previews: Panthers host Ione/Arlington in first round

IMBLER — Imbler hosts round one of the 1A state tournament, welcoming a Big Sky team to town on Wednesday, Feb. 21, for a 6:30 p.m. game.

Ione/Arlington makes the trip to Imbler as the fourth team from the Big Sky League and a 24th seed for the playoffs.

The Cardinals (15-8 overall) finished the regular season on a four-game winning streak but struggled upon reaching the district tournament, falling by 30 points to South Wasco County and taking a 42-point loss to Trout Lake/Glenwood. During the season, the Cardinals did take on some Old Oregon League teams, falling to Joseph but picking up wins over both Powder Valley and Cove.

Seeded No. 9, Imbler comes into the game with an 18-7 overall record. At the district tournament, the Panthers fell to Nixyaawii by two points in the OOL district title game.

The winner moves on to face either Prairie City/Burnt River or North Lake/Paisley.

Bobcats land home game for state opener

UNION — Kaelyn Shoemaker. the Old Oregon League Player of the Year, and her Union teammates will again have the opportunity to play at home.

The 13th seeded Bobcats host No. 20 Myrtle Point on Wednesday, Feb. 21, in first-round action of the 1A state tournament.

Myrtle Point comes out of the Skyline League as the fourth team after North Douglas, Umpqua Valley Christian and New Hope Christian. Myrtle Point started the season with a seven-game win streak and ended the season winning six of the team’s final eight games. Myrtle Point sports an 18-8 overall record.

Union ended the regular season with a 19-6 overall record and is looking to bounce back after being shocked by Joseph in a 32-29 loss in the opening round of the Old Oregon League district tournament.

The winner will advance to second-round play against either Camas Valley or County Christian.

Old Oregon League champs to host C.S. Lewis

POWDER VALLEY — The champions of the Old Oregon League start their run toward a state title with a home game on Wednesday, Feb. 21.

Powder Valley hosts C.S. Lewis Academy in the first round of the 1A state tournament at 6 p.m.

C.S. Lewis Academy is the third team from the 1A Casco League and hold a 17-6 overall record. The Watchmen won four of the team’s final six games, falling to Crosshill Christian and St. Paul before ending on a good note with a victory over Falls City/Kings Valley Charter. Of regional interest, C.S. Lewis Academy picked up wins over Lyle/Wishram, Dufur and Spray/Mitchell/Wheeler during the regular season.

The Badgers look to add to the team’s present 11-game win streak, including a sweep of games in the Old Oregon League district tournament leading to the league title.

A win by the Badgers could result in a showdown with Joseph in the second round. Joseph is on the road to Chiloquin in first-round action.
