I moved to Lostine in March 2023 after 45 years in Europe and Asia teaching in various universities, and I quickly became attached to the hospitality in the small town’s Blue Banana cafe as a community meeting point for farmers, ranchers, explorers, dancers, etc.
I met 91-year-old Les Carlsen at the Blue Banana often, and we began playing with our forgetful memories. But then we started playfully twisting the words within new meaning fields. We began first with the observation that we tended to forget with our forgetfulness, and we said out loud, “Maybe we need to forget what we forget, and just get on with life.” Then there was an explosion of double-meaning words that we played with that somehow made beautiful sense: We said that maybe we should “care to care,” “dare to dare,” “love to love,” “dream to dream,” “right to right” or even “write to right.”
