High school girls basketball roundup: Bobcats overcome illness, Myrtle Point

UNION — Union actually had two opponents as the team took the home floor on Wednesday, Feb. 21. The 13th-seeded Bobcats were facing 20th-seed Myrtle Point and were also battling the unseeded coughing and hacking that has been making the rounds of the school.
“We have been battling sickness for a few weeks now and it has made things tough,” Union head coach Koby Dunlap said.
Union was able to overcome both the other Bobcats and the “crud” in a 44-36 victory in the first round of the OSAA Class 1A state playoffs.
“It was good to bounce back from the loss we took at district,” Dunlap said. “It was a good team win with everyone contributing.”
Individual and team statistics were not provided for the game.
Union (20-6 overall) moves on to second-round action against County Christian (20-7 overall) on Feb. 24 in Molalla. Game time is 5 p.m.
Imbler 57, Ione/Arlington 26
IMBLER — Hosting 24th seed Ione/Arlington, No. 9 Imbler had no problems in the opening round of the OSAA Class 1A state basketball tournament, rolling to a 57-26 victory.
Led by Rachael Stirewalt’s 18 points in the game, the Panthers led from the beginning with defensive pressure forcing numerous Cardinal turnovers. Paiten Braseth added 12 points in the win.
Imbler (19-7 overall) leaves the home gym on Feb. 24 to take on No. 8 North Lake/Paisley for a 1 p.m. game.
Powder Valley 51, C.S. Lewis Academy 19
NORTH POWDER — Fans of Powder Valley were a tad nervous on Wednesday, Feb. 21. C.S. Lewis Academy, the 27th seed of the OSAA Class 1A state tournament, were hanging close to the sixth-seed Badgers.
Using 19 points to open the second quarter, Powder Valley eased the tensions of the home fans, running away from the Watchmen and taking a 51-19 first-round victory.
After the first eight minutes of the game, this matchup was all Powder Valley with the defense holding C.S. Lewis Academy to the Watchmen’s second-lowest point total of the year. St. Paul previously downed C.S. Lewis Academy 39-8 on Jan. 10.
Team and individual statistics were not provided for the game.
Badger fans will have an additional chance to cheer on the Powder Valley girls as the team hosts Chiloquin on Feb. 24 for second-round action. Game time is 2 p.m.
