College women’s basketball: Eastern Oregon closes out regular season with back-to-back wins, stretches winning streak to six

LA GRANDE — The Eastern Oregon University women’s basketball team closed out its regular season on a high note.

The Mountaineers picked up back-to-back wins at home, heading into the conference tournament with a 20-6 (16-6 CCC) record and the No. 4 seed.

Eastern Oregon 81, Corban 62

In Eastern Oregon’s first game of the weekend homestand, the Mountaineers got off to a fast start and never looked back.

Eastern Oregon scored 26 points in the first quarter off 9-16 shooting (56.25%) to build up an early 26-17 lead. The Mountaineers added a 17-12 advantage in the second quarter to lead 43-29 at the halftime break. Brie Holecek led the way early on, scoring 14 points off 4-6 shooting from the field — she added five boards. Haley Robinett and Bayley Brennan each scored eight, with Robinett also hauling in five rebounds.

The third quarter put the game out of contention, as Eastern Oregon pushed its lead to 62-40 heading into the final frame. The Mountaineers led by as much as 26 points early in the fourth, before cruising to a 19-point victory.

Holecek finished with a game-high 21 points, off 6-10 shooting. Robinett totaled 14 points and eight rebounds. Beverly Slater grabbed 13 rebounds, helping Eastern Oregon hold a 44-33 advantage in team rebounding. The Mountaineers finished 29-63 (46%) from the field as a team, while scoring 30 points in the paint and benefiting from 23 bench points.

Eastern Oregon 60, Bushnell 57

The Mountaineers’ second game of the weekend came down to the wire, as a double-figure advantage evaporated into a one-possession game with under 30 seconds to go.

Bushnell got off to a good start, leading Eastern Oregon 16-13 after the first quarter. The Mountaineers struggled shooting in the opening frame, going 4-14 (28.57%) from the field.

Eastern Oregon picked up its efforts in the second quarter, shooting 6-17 (35.29%) to outscore Bushnell 19-11 and take a 32-27 lead into the break at halftime.

The third quarter was neck-and-neck, as Eastern Oregon held a 12-10 advantage to lead by seven heading into the final quarter.

A three-pointer by Robinett at the 7:19 mark pushed Eastern Oregon’s lead to 51-41, but Bushnell did not relent. The Beacons chipped away at the lead, as a three-pointer by Aspen Slifka with 21 seconds remaining cut Eastern Oregon’s lead to 57-55. The Mountaineers closed out the stretch 3-4 at the free-throw line, holding off the comeback attempt by the Beacons.

Brennan led all scorers with 24 points, shooting 7-18 from the field. Slater totaled a double-double, scoring 13 points and grabbing 15 rebounds.

Coming off the wins to close out the regular season, Eastern Oregon enters the Cascade Collegiate Conference Tournament as the No. 4 seed. The Mountaineers are set to host Bushnell, the five seed, in a rematch at Quinn Coliseum at 5:30 p.m. on Feb. 27.
