College women’s wrestling: Eastern Oregon places fifth at CCC championships, send two athletes to NAIA Championships

ATHERTON, Calif. — The Eastern Oregon University women’s wrestling program earned a solid team finish and saw two athletes move onto the national stage at this weekend’s Cascade Collegiate Conference Championships in Atherton, California.

The Mountaineers earned 72 team points, placing fifth out of eight schools. Irma Retano and Liv Wieber highlighted the day for Eastern Oregon, earning qualification to the NAIA Women’s Wrestling National Championships.

Retano competed admirably at the 116-pound division, despite falling in the quarterfinal round, her first match of the day. Retano bounced back to win three consecutive consolation round matches, winning all three by tech fall. In the third-place match, she won by tech fall over Providence’s Arieana Arias in a time of 1:31.

At 155, Wieber placed fourth overall to earn 9.5 team points and a trip to the NAIA National Championships. After losing her opening match, Wieber earned a bye in the consolation round one and then defeated Providence’s Sadie Antoque by tech fall in a time of 2:23. Wieber was defeated in the third-place match by Evergreen State’s Flor Parker Borrero.

Trinity Tafoya made her way to the championship match of the 191-pound weight class with a win by fall in a time of 58 seconds. She was defeated in the final match.

Nayeli Flores Roque placed sixth at 109 to earn six team points for Eastern Oregon. She defeated Simpson’s Melanie Salazar by tech fall in the consolation round one.

At 123, Paige Chafin won two matches in the consolation rounds. She placed sixth and earned the Mountaineers nine team points.

Anna Rodriguez earned five points and a sixth-place finish in the 130-pound division. Jocelyn Velasco placed sixth at 155, earning 6.5 team points.

Coming off the Cascade Collegiate Conference Championship, the Mountaineers will gear up for the NAIA National Championships on March 8-9. The selection committee will officially announce the full slate of qualified competitors on Feb. 27.
