- Union's Chase Koshinsky goes up for a shot during the OSAA 1A state playoff game against Falls City/Kings Valley Charter at Union High School on Feb. 23, 2024. Union took an early lead and won the game 59-27.
BAKER CITY — Crane, the top-seeded boys basketball team coming into quarterfinal play in the OSAA Class 1A state tournament, has just a lone blemish on its record.
Way back on Dec. 7, Union claimed a 58-46 victory over the Mustangs, while playing in the 1A Preview Tournament. That one loss would be the last time the Mustangs ended on the wrong side of the scoreboard this season.
In a game many are calling the championship matchup in 1A basketball, Union and Crane once again take the court on Thursday, Feb. 28, in quarterfinal action in the 1A state boys tournament. The Bobcats and Mustangs take the court at 1:30 p.m. at Baker High School.
The game features two of the most prolific scorers in 1A, Crane’s Cody Siegner and Union’s Bo Ledbetter. The 6-foot-7 Siegner will battle the 6-4 Ledbetter under the basket all day.
The Mustangs come into the quarterfinals as the highest scoring team in 1A, just points shy of a 2,000-point year at 1,987 points. Crane has gone over the 100-point mark once already this season and has scored above 80 points in 10 games, including the team’s most recent win, an 81-40 trouncing of Bonanza in the second round of the 1A tournament.
Union can also see the scoreboard light up, putting up 1,895 points on the year and scoring 80 points or more in six matchups. Though not reaching 80 points, the Bobcats also had no problems in their second-round game, rolling over Falls City/Kings Valley Charter in a 59-27 game that saw the bench hit the floor early in the second half.
The winner of the Union/Crane rematch will advance to the semifinals to take on either Crosshill Christian or Trinity Lutheran.
