LA GRANDE — Multiple vehicle crashes on Cabbage Hill closed the interstate on Friday, March 1.
Interstate 84 reopened around 6:30 p.m., according to a press release from the Oregon Department of Transportation. The closure was first reported around 4 p.m. and effected both lanes of travel.
The closure initially impacted the interstate between Exit 265, 4 miles east of La Grande, and Exit 224, 15 miles east of Pendleton. Around 4:30 p.m., the eastbound lanes reopened, but the closure was extended to Exit 216, 7 miles east of Pendleton.
The closure is due to multiple crashes on Cabbage Hill near milepost 222, ODOT said, and lasted multiple hours.
Crews responded to the scene and worked to clear the highway.
The closure also impacted U.S. 30 and OR 204 as they are not suitable alternatives for interstate traffic. Both roads were closed to non-local freight and passenger vehicles.
