La Grande's Maddie Seavert looks to pass during the OSAA Class 4A state playoff game against Marist Catholic at La Grande High School on March 2, 2024. La Grande lost 36-30.

LA GRANDE — La Grande, champions of the 4A Greater Oregon League, saw its season come to a close as the 11th-seeded Marist Catholic Spartans claimed a 36-30 upset victory over the sixth-seeded Tigers in the opening round of the OSAA Class 4A state tournament on Saturday, March 2, in La Grande.

Problems finding the net hindered La Grande in the low-scoring affair. Marist Catholic jumped out to a slim 10-8 lead in the first quarter. The Tigers could only add four points in the second quarter and the Spartans led 19-12 at the half.

The Tigers again could only add four points in the third quarter and started the fourth quarter facing a 30-16 deficit.

La Grande went on a 14-6 run through the final eight minutes but it wasn’t enough.

Kayle Collman was the lone La Grande player in double figures with 11 points. Maezie Wilcox ended with six points and Peyton Daggett added five points.

The Tigers end the season with a 16-9 overall record, including a 5-1 4A Greater Oregon League record and a league title.

Head coach Brian Wright begins the season next year without seniors Kadance Arant, Maya Willson and Wilcox.
