College women’s wrestling: Eastern Oregon places 24th at NAIA Championships, Wieber collects All-American Status

JAMESTOWN, N.D. — The Eastern Oregon University women’s wrestling team concluded its season with a strong showing at the NAIA National Championships in Jamestown, North Dakota.

Liv Wieber led the way, wrestling to an All-American status at the conclusion of the event. The Mountaineers scored 17 points as a team to place 24th out 37 schools competing.

Wieber worked her way through the 155-pound bracket, starting with a bye and then defeating Hastings’ Lisa Hoeflich by a 13-0 tech fall. In the quarterfinals, the sophomore battled out a close 3-2 decision over Menlo’s Shannon Workinger to advance to the semifinals. After being defeated, Wieber was set to compete in the fifth-place match, before Evergreen State’s Flor Parker-Borreo forfeited due to injury, securing Wieber’s fifth-place finish.

At 116, Irma Retano took her opening round matchup by way of a narrow 10-9 decision over Avila’s Markayla Lottie. After a defeat in the round of 16, Retano defeated Brewton-Parker College’s Jamesa Robinson by 6-5 decision. The graduate student took down Providence’s Isabelle Asuncion by a 10-0 tech fall to advance to the consolation final round of eight. There, Retano fell to Campbellsville’s Icart Galumette by fall.

Paige Chafin (123), Trinity Tafoya (191), and Anna Rodriguez competed in their weight classes, but were defeated in consecutive matches.

The NAIA National Championships mark the conclusion of Eastern Oregon’s 2023-24 campaign.
