Last week’s candidate forum at the Catherine Creek Community Center in Union brought to light a fundamental aspect of democracy — active citizen participation is crucial for its success.
With 14 candidates and over 100 attendees, the event underscored the shared responsibility we have in shaping Union County’s future through engagement and involvement.
At the core of the forum were discussions surrounding pressing local issues and the proposed solutions put forth by the candidates. Housing affordability emerged as a central concern, with candidates stressing the need to address rising costs and ensure that homeownership remains accessible to all residents.
Moreover, the forum highlighted the urgent need to address substance abuse and addiction within our community. Candidates emphasized the importance of supporting law enforcement efforts and implementing comprehensive drug education programs in schools to effectively tackle these critical issues.
Economic prosperity was also a key topic, with candidates sharing their visions for supporting local businesses and advocating for essential infrastructure improvements. The forum provided a platform for meaningful dialogue on fostering economic growth while preserving the unique character of Union County.
It’s evident that democracy goes beyond merely voting; ongoing engagement and dialogue are essential. The voices of engaged citizens play a crucial role in shaping policies and decisions that impact our community.
Active participation by both voters and candidates is vital for democracy to thrive. Running for office is not an easy decision, as candidates must be prepared to face criticism and negative feedback.
However, it also offers an opportunity to make a positive difference in the community.
While democracy may not be perfect, its design ensures that the people are represented by those who care about the future and strive to make our area a better place to live, work and play.
In the end, it is through our collective action and commitment to democratic principles that we can build a stronger Union County.
