LA GRANDE — The Union/Cove softball team played not only on the field but also served as hosts as the first day of action concluded on Friday, March 29, at the Union Spring Bash in La Grande.
The Bobcats split their first day of action, falling to 3A Burns/Crane in the first game before bouncing back in game two for a victory.
Facing the Hilanders, Union/Cove were unable to get the bats moving facing a pitcher already signed to advance to the collegiate level. In a shutout, Burns/Crane won 11-0.
“Although the result was not in our favor, we saw a lot of good things from the Bobcats,” Union/Cove head coach Madison Barr said.
Game two saw Union/Cove fall behind early to opponent Warrenton. Rallying late, the Bobcats scored in the bottom of the seventh to claim a 9-8 win.
“Cabella Gregory had a great day at the plate and on the mound,” Barr said. “Reagan O’Rourke hit the walk off double for us in the second game for the win.”
Barr also credited La Grande High School for its assistance in the tournament.
“I want to give a shoutout to La Grande for working with us to host the tournament,” she said.
Elgin/Imbler also hit the field for two games in the initial day of play. Facing 3A Vale, the Vikings downed the Huskies 11-0 in a shortened five inning game. Later in the day, Elgin/Imbler took a loss to Burns/Crane.
The second day of action will continue on March 30 with Elgin/Imbler meeting Wallowa Valley while Union/Cove is scheduled for two games. The morning will see a rematch with Vale with the later game taking the field against Wallowa Valley.
