High school track and field: Union decathletes take part in Summit

SUMMIT — Five track and field athletes representing Union finished their spring break with a day of competition, taking part in the Summit Decathlon March 29-30 in Summit.
Sophomore Jackson Davenport picked up the highest finish for the boys, placing sixth in the meet after a point total of 5,583.
Davenport’s top showings in the competition was fourth in the 110-meter event followed by a fifth in the 400 meters, an event Davenport ran a personal best time of 56.38 seconds.
Also a sophomore, Kai Russell, with a total of 2,721 points, placed 23rd in the field.
Russell had a personal best time of 5 minutes, 12.01 seconds in the 1,500, placing seventh in the event, to lead his final score.
Davenport and Russell competed in the 100, 400, 1,500, 110 hurdles, shot put, discus, javelin, high jump and pole vault over the two days.
Three Union girls competed in the heptathlon over the two days, taking part in the 200, 800, 100 hurdles, shot put, javelin, high jump and long jump events.
Freshman Sawyer Shoemaker compiled 2,917 points, good enough for sixth place in the field. Shoemaker’s top finish came in the javelin, throwing a distance of 26.76 meters for fifth.
Junior Kaelyn Shoemaker placed 17th at the end of the two days after a point total of 2,204. A throw of 9.38 meters in the shot put proved to be the best finish for Shoemaker, third in the shot put standings.
Just an eighth grade student, Jersey Davenport competed at the high school level, finishing 20th in the standings with a 1,913 point total. Davenport managed a top-20 finish in the 800 as her best event, finishing 16th with a personal best time of 2:53.11.
