PILOT ROCK — Originally scheduled to host Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii on the home field, the Union/Cove softball team instead found themselves on a bus and playing two games in Pilot Rock on Friday, April 5, in 2A/1A Special District 7 action.

Due to wet field conditions in Union, a decision was made to move the two games.

After arriving in Pilot Rock, the LadyCats fought the Rockets to an 8-7 victory in the opener.

The nightcap first appeared to be a two-win day for Union/Cove as the LadyCats led 14-9 heading into the bottom of the final inning. Pilot Rock/Nixyaawii rallied in the final outs and stole a 15-14 win, giving Union/Cove a split for the day.

“It was a couple really good games,” Union/Cove head coach Madison Barr said. “Amanda Lawyer and Cabella Gregory both had great days at the plate and both added a home run for the day. Freshman Avi Allen added key hits for us in both games.”

Union/Cove (5-5 overall, 2-1 2A/1A Special District 7) starts off a three-game week on April 9 with a trip to Elgin to take on Elgin/Imbler (2-5 overall, 1-2 2A/1A Special District 7). A game on April 2 saw the LadyCats win over the Huskies, 9-7.

Still early in the league season, Union/Cove is second in the district standings, behind only undefeated Heppner/Ione/Condon (2-0 2A/1A Special District 7). The LadyCats are currently 12th in the state rankings.
